today we were introduced to two people who were working in the media industry, or rather for both media powerhouses in sg. one of them is a broadcast journalist/sports/biz bla i can't remember, (too many areas) while the other is a photo journalist. For the first speaker he was really the typical media person, outspoken, good looking (make witty jokes too), he gave a positive image of journalism in sg of course. However the one that really hit me was the photojournalist. sadly, he picked on me in class by asking me what is the difference between journalism and photojournalism. which i said was the difference in the way the story is told, one by words and one by pictures. and i think he wanted the answer i said, cos it seriously was a one-sided viewpoint of what photojournalism is that is perceived by many.
he showed us pictures he took during the SARS period, many of them hit me greatly. maybe it was what he said about the people, who showed emotion, even though they were wearing masks, or maybe it was the courage of the healthcare workers, or the pain of the patients, or maybe just being so close to the incident, getting a whole view of it just made it feel so miraculous. and there was one picture which he said needed a caption to tell the story behind these two nurses beside a bed, which was of another nurse who passed away due to the virus. and how those who left us, their friends and relatives didn't have a proper closure due to the handling of the remains to prevent the outbreak from worsening.

hmmm. do i really have the courage to be a journalist? i was rather turned off by the pictures, by fear of course. and he actually covered the tsunami? i dont think i even want to cover any bad incident that happened in sg. i think i shall stick to my "magazine editor" dream.
